I think it's a marketing scam. These double rolls don't look like double rolls to me. Maybe I'm now so used to seeing the double roll that my experience has been narrowed. Remember when there were no double rolls? I also remember paying 99 cents for a four-pack back in my first apartment days. That's when I wasn't stealing from my parents' stock on the weekly visits. When I first started buying the double rolls they wouldn't fit on most of the holders in my house but now they slide on and spin with no problems. So what's the deal? What does make up a double roll? Is it the number of squares (which can be manipulated by sizing the squares smaller) or is it over-all length (which can become irrelevant by making the layer thinner). Are you a double-roller or a single? Inquiring minds want to know.

My vote goes right for marketing scam....it's a classic example of marketing 101. And yes, those double rolls would NEVER fit on the spindle and roll...you had to tug and pull. Now they just slide right on and twirl with a flick of the writst!! Great topic!! :)
Ahhhh, the good old days when a dollar bought a 4 roll pack of toilet tissue and $5 got you a large bottle of Tide laundry detergent. Now everything is downsized and costs lots, lots more. It's all a scam. It's all greed. Another soap box!
I’m a double-roller – simply because it reduces the number of times I have to replace the roll. (Why is it always me?)
But you have a keen sense of observation – these double rolls DO fit on the holder much easier now. Thus, they have become smaller..damn...
I have to confess to a complex mix of ennui and disinterest when faced with the mass of toilet paper roll choices. I mean REALLY. It's TP.
